- Synopsis
- Considered one of the greatest Chinese films ever made, this 4K restored classic is a masterpiece of restraint and poetic melancholy. In a Southern Chinese town after the war, Yuwen (Wei Wei) leads a joyless, routine existence caring for her ailing husband Liyan (Shi Yu). When Zhang Zhichen (Li Wei), Liyan's childhood friend and Yuwen's former lover, comes to visit, long-suppressed emotions reignite. As the three navigate love, duty and propriety, a brief emotional tempest stirs the small town — before calm is restored. A landmark of Eastern cinematic aesthetics, celebrated for its lyrical long takes and 'contained feeling'.
